Speakers Bios

Mark Edwards, Principal, Deloitte Recap LLC
Mark G. Edwards is the Managing Director of Deloitte Recap LLC. More than 500 biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and service companies subscribe to Recap’s databases (Recap.com & rDNA.com) or retain Recap to advise them on biotech alliances and valuations. Mr. Edwards has been invited to speak to many trade and industry groups about structuring alliances and other business relationships that are related to the development and commercialization of new technologies, compounds, or products. These groups include the Institute of Medicine, the Licensing Executives Society, the Association of University Technology Managers, Sigma Xi (the Scientific Research Society of the National Academy of Sciences), and the Biotechnology Industry Organization. He has also provided expert testimony at deposition or trial in lawsuits dealing with either reasonable royalties or normal custom and practice in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Mr. Edwards is on the Board of Directors of Allos Therapeutics, Inc. Prior to founding Recap in 1988, Mr. Edwards was Manager of Business Development at Chiron Corporation. He received his B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from Stanford University.


Peter Condon, Associate Director, Genentech
Peter Condon has worked at Genentech since 2000. Peter holds an MBA from the Wharton Business School, and has an undergraduate degree in economics from Harvard University. At Genentech, Peter began his career in the Market Development group where he conducted the launch planning efforts for Xolair and led the market research and forecasting activities for Genentech's specialty therapeutics group. In 2003, Peter joined Business Development in the Oncology licensing group and has successfully completed a number of research and product licensing transactions. Prior to Genentech, Peter worked as a consultant to health care companies in the Health Care Group at Booz Allen & Hamilton.


Sara Hall, CEO, Tacere Therapeutics
Prior to founding Tacere, Sara was a Director and the Chief Executive Officer of Benitec Limited, an Australian Stock Exchanged-listed company developing RNAi-based therapeutics. Sara joined Benitec through its acquisition of Avocel Inc., one of the pioneering companies in the development of RNAi therapeutics. After creating a 9X return in 18 months for her investors in Avocel, Sara became the Chief Operating Officer and ultimately CEO of Benitec. Sara has a proven track record as a biotech entrepreneur, from conception through due diligence, license negotiation, staffing, facilities, marketing, funding, and M&A; and has held senior positions in R&D as well as intellectual property and business development at Boehringer Ingelheim, Clontech/BD Biosciences, and B-Bridge International. Sara has been recognized for both her business and scientific innovations, including serving on the Scientific Advisory Board of Sigma-Aldrich and as the recipient of two R&D 100 Awards. Sara holds BS and MS degrees in virology.


Lee Bendekgey, former CFO and General Counsel, Nuvelo
Lee Bendekgey joined Nuvelo in July 2004 as its Senior Vice President and General Counsel. In August, 2007, Mr. Bendekgey assumed the additional role of Chief Financial Officer, which he also held from July 2004 until November 2005. Prior to joining us, Mr. Bendekgey was employed by Incyte Corporation from 1998 to January 2004, where he held several executive positions, including executive vice president, general counsel, acting chief financial officer and acting general manager of information business. From 1993 to 1997, Mr. Bendekgey worked for Silicon Graphics, Inc. where he held a variety of positions in their legal group. Prior to his employment with Silicon Graphics, he served as a partner at Graham & James (now Squire Sanders & Dempsey) where he specialized in intellectual property, corporate, and commercial law and founded the firm's Palo Alto office. Mr. Bendekgey graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree from Kalamazoo College and received his J.D. from Stanford University. Effective as of the January 27 2009, Lee Bendekgey resigned from his position as Nuvelo's general counsel. Mr. Bendekgey remaining with ARCA as its chief financial officer and treasurer on a transitional basis through March 31, 2009.


Jim Schaeffer, Executive Director, Licensing And External Research, Merck Research Laboratories, Merck & Co., Inc.
Dr. Jim Schaeffer joined Merck Research Laboratories in 1986. During his first 16 years at MRL, he directed research groups focusing primarily on neuroendocrine-related projects. Jim joined the Department of External Scientific Affairs in 2003 with primary responsibility for all neuroscience licensing opportunities and during the next 18 months, he was directly involved in the signing of four major agreements including one with Lundbeck for co-development of gaboxadol for the treatment of sleeping disorders. Jim moved to San Diego in 2004 to assume the role of Merck’s “Science Scout” on the West Coast with the responsibility to identify new opportunities across all therapeutic areas at all stages of development including enabling technologies. Dr. Schaeffer received his PhD at Baylor College of Medicine and was a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr Julius Axelrod at the National Institute of Mental Health. He is the author of more than 110 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Karen Dempsey, a partner in Orrick's San Francisco office, is a member of the Corporate Group. Ms. Dempsey works with a broad range of public and private companies, venture capital firms and investment banks. She is involved in a full range of corporate legal projects for emerging growth companies including venture financings, public offerings, public company securities law compliance matters and mergers and acquisitions. She also regularly advises public companies and board of directors on corporate governance issues. Ms. Dempsey's clients include private and public companies in the biotechnology, real estate, finance and Internet related industries. She also represents underwriters in initial public offerings and follow-on offerings and venture capital firms in investment transactions.Ms. Dempsey is a frequent speaker on corporate and securities law topics including Initial Public Offerings, Corporate Governance and Sarbanes-Oxley matters. Ms. Dempsey is also Co-Editor of Part III of Venture Capital & Public Offering Negotiation, published by Aspen Law & Business. Before joining Orrick, Ms. Dempsey was a shareholder at Heller Ehrman LLP and was chair of their firmwide corporate governance practice group.
