SPEAKER BIOS

Peter Hirth, Ph.D., CEO, Plexxikon
Dr. Hirth co-founded Plexxikon in December 2000, and has over 25 years of biotechnology and pharmaceutical discovery and development experience. Plexxikon was built as a novel, structure-guided drug discovery platform. Over the last ten years, Plexxikon has brought several NCEs into the clinic in a variety of indications. Most advanced from this portfolio is a selective B-raf V600 inhibitor that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of patients with BRAFV600E mutation-positive inoperable or metastatic melanoma, as detected by an FDA-approved test, and is sold under the brand name Zelboraf™. Plexxikon was acquired in April 2011 by Daiichi Sankyo and is now a member of the Daiichi Sankyo Group.

Previously, Peter was president of Sugen, Inc. until the sale of the company to Pharmacia Corporation in 1999. At Sugen, he helped build the company from its inception and advanced several kinase inhibitors through clinical trials for the treatment of oncology. This includes the drug Sutent, now owned by Pfizer through its acquisition of Pharmacia. Prior to Sugen, Dr. Hirth was a vice president in research with Boehringer Mannheim where, among other responsibilities, he successfully led the company's erythropoietin program. Previously, he also was a research scientist with the Max Planck Institute, following the completion of his post doctoral work at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Hirth received his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from Heidelberg University, Germany.


Anand Mehra, M.D., Partner, Sofinnova Ventures
Anand joined Sofinnova Ventures in 2007 to focus on biopharmaceutical investing. Anand’s diverse background equips him to work with entrepreneurs on scientific, clinical, and strategic levels. Currently, he is a director of Marinus and Nextwave Pharmaceuticals, and led the firm's investments in Vicept (Acquired:  Allergan) and Aerie.  Anand also played an important role in the firm’s investments in Hyperion, Preglem (Acquired:  Gedeon Richter), and Amarin (NASDAQ:  AMRN).
Prior to joining Sofinnova Ventures, Anand worked in JP Morgan’s private equity and venture capital group, where he was heavily involved in new investments, management of their public portfolio, and the firm’s spin-out from the bank. Before joining the venture community, Anand was a consultant in McKinsey & Company's pharmaceutical practice, advising pharma and biotech on key strategic issues, and an NIH-funded Fellow focused on reperfusion injury in stroke.
Anand received his M.D. from Columbia Medical School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia.


Peter Thompson, M.D., Co-Founder, Cleave Biosciences
Peter is a biotechnology executive, investor and entrepreneur. He is a Venture Partner at Orbimed Advisors and the founder and Managing Director of Strategicon Partners, an investment and management services company. He co-founded Trubion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: TRBN), and served as CEO and Chairman from its inception through its successful IPO and as a public company until his retirement in 2009. Dr. Thompson is the former Vice President & General Manager of Chiron Informatics at Chiron Corporation and held various executive positions in Becton Dickinson, including Vice President, Research and Technology Department prior to joining Chiron. Dr. Thompson is a co-founder of iMetrikus, a clinical decision support company, where he served as CEO and Chairman. He serves as a Director on the Boards of Anthera Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ANTH), Methylgene (TSX: MYG), Response Biomedical (TSX: RBM), Cleave Biosciences (Co-Founder), Principia Biosciences, & CoDa Therapeutics. Dr. Thompson is an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awardee, an inventor on numerous patents, a board-certified internist and oncologist, an Affiliate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Washington, and was on faculty at the National Cancer Institute following his internal medicine training at Yale University.


Guy Miller, M.D., Ph.D., CEO, Edison Pharmaceuticals
Guy Miller, MD, PhD is the founder of Edison and has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of its Board since the company's inception in 2005. Prior to this, he founded Galileo Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company, and was its Chairman and CEO from 1995-2005.
Dr. Miller holds an MD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Virginia. He completed his surgical internship at the University of Chicago, and a residency in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Miller completed a fellowship in multidisciplinary critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins, where he was on the faculty as an Assistant Professor until 1996. He is currently an attending physician in medical-surgical critical care medicine at Stanford University-PAVAMC.
He also serves as Executive Chairman of Ampere Life Sciences, a spinout of Edison focused on antioxidants and consumer products.


Susan Molineaux, Ph.D., CEO, Calithera Biosciences
Dr. Molineaux is the co-founder, President and CEO of Calithera Biosciences, a start-up company that commenced operations in June of 2010.  Prior to starting Calithera, Dr. Molineaux was a co-founder of Proteolix and served as the CSO for two years before becoming President and CEO of the company.  Proteolix was acquired by Onyx Pharmaceuticals in November 2009.  Prior to joining Proteolix, Dr. Molineaux was Vice President of Biology at Rigel Pharmaceuticals from 2000 to 2003. Before that, she was Vice President of Biology at Praelux, and from 1994 through 1999, Dr. Molineaux served as Vice President of Drug Development at Praecis Pharmaceuticals. From 1989 until 1994 she was a scientist in the immunology group at Merck, in Rahway, NJ. Dr. Molineaux earned a BS in Biology from Smith College, a PhD in molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University.


Greg Heibel, [Lead Facilitator] Partner - Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP
Greg Heibel, a partner in the Silicon Valley office, is a member of the Emerging Companies Group, which advises emerging and public technology companies, venture capital firms and other technology investors, as well as Orrick's Energy Group.

Mr. Heibel's practice includes the formation, financing and general corporate counseling of rapidly growing technology companies; the representation of venture capital firms and other investors in private and public offerings, as well as other complex transactions related to high growth companies.

Mr. Heibel has completed hundreds of financings, mergers, acquisitions and intellectual property transactions for clients in the networking, wireless, Internet, software, life sciences and consumer industries. Additionally, Mr. Heibel has represented numerous Nasdaq listed companies in their public offering, mergers and acquisitions and ongoing corporate governance needs, including Foundry Networks, Virage Networks, Adeza, Laserscope, Intellisync and Preview Systems.
