Legal Breakfast Workshop:
"Patents 101" Sidestepping the Patent Trolls
Agenda:
8:30-9:00 AM Registration, Networking & Breakfast 9:00-10:00 AM Workshop – Patents 101 Patent cases like eBay and Blackberry triggered an outcry over "patent trolls" -- who supposedly ambush business with junk patents. The U.S. Supreme Court responded last week by speaking to the longstanding principle under patent law that a patentee may get a permanent injunction once patent validity and infringement have been adjudicated. However, early stage companies don't have the money to get past patent validity and infringement. In that regard, Fish&Richardson, a distinguished IP law firm in the life sciences, will present Patents 101 so that every early stage venture can protect themselves as best as possible to avoid or minimize the expense and time required to defend patents. Come enjoy breakfast and your quick study to maximizing the effectiveness and minimizing the costs of patenting your assets. Panelists: Mary Ann Dillahunty - Principal, Fish & Richardson Ms. Dillahunty has extensive technical, research management, and legal experience in the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, having worked for many years as a scientist, manager and attorney at both large and small pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. A significant amount of Ms. Dillahunty's practice and experience is in interference proceedings. Ping Hwung - Principal, Fish & Richardson Ping Hwung's practice emphasizes patent prosecution in the areas of biotechnology and pharmaceutical inventions. She has technical experience as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University & Baylor College of Medicine. Ping has written & presented extensively on subjects relating to biological chemistry, molecular cell biology, immunpathology, & pharmaceuticals. Kraig Anderson - Technology Specialist, F&R Prior to coming to F&R, Dr. Anderson spent three years at a Boston area law firm, where he drafted and prosecuted applications in technologies including small molecule pharmaceuticals, chemical syntheses, ion channel proteins, drug coated stents, bariatric implants, microfluidics, semiconductor sensors, and nanoscale quantum effect devices.
