InnovateMD, formerly The California Center for Healthcare and Biomedical Technology Research Foundation, is a physician founded non-profit organization focused on accelerating the development of technologies in order to provide treatment options to Bay Area patients that would otherwise be unavailable and advance medical technology to a tipping point in the fight against disease.
InnovateMD is dedicated to:
- Advancing medical technology from preclinical development through all stages of clinical trials,
- Improving patient access to biomedical innovations in order to provide tomorrow’s therapies today,
- Identifying true medical needs and innovative solutions to fill those needs, and
- Fostering collaborations between physicians and industry to increase the efficacy and efficiency in the market.
A great deal of medical research is currently conducted in academic institutions but there are roadblocks in the academic world that can hinder the research process, make it more costly and can effectively block the necessary two-way collaboration between the researcher and patient. The physicians of InnovateMD, who are industry leaders in their fields of medicine, feel that by taping the vast resource of clinical knowledge, experience and enthusiasm that resides in the practice of private medicine, medical research can advance in a more directed and efficient manner. The physicians want to take a leadership role in eliminating the barriers and complexities that now exist between basic research and clinical practice. They will work to foster research driven clinical practices and at the same time foster a patient driven research process. This exciting concept, termed “translational medicine”, is recognized by various life science researchers throughout the world. This type of program translates basic research into real therapies in a more timely and cost efficient manner.
This leadership role and dedication will enable physicians to provide the clinical trial service, vision, and feedback to expedite the latest innovation to the bedside. The physicians of InnovateMD will:
- Establish a life science technology education series for other physicians and the public,
- Hold roundtable industry discussions on future technology,
- Facilitate research grants for affiliated physicians, and
- Will establish a Phase I Clinical Trial Unit to begin immediate testing of the newest technologies.
This Phase I Unit, the first of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area, will focus initially on cancer therapies allowing patients the earliest access to the latest emerging treatment and therapeutic options available.
