Moderator & Panelists' Bios:

Deborah A. Marshall, Director, Business Department, Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin
Deborah Marshall is a director in the firm's Business Department and serves on the Management Committee. She concentrates her practice on business counseling for emerging growth technology companies, life sciences companies, venture funds and technology-based, multinational corporations. Ms. Marshall was recognized as a 2005 Northern California Super Lawyer by Law & Politics, which published a list of the winners in San Francisco magazine.
Ms. Marshall has represented technology and life science companies at all stages of development, from entrepreneurs to publicly traded entities. She has advised clients in the internet, software, semiconductor, electronics, biopharmaceutical, genomics, medical device and diagnostics sectors in all aspects of their corporate development. Ms. Marshall has significant experience in venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions, public offerings and strategic partnerships with multinational pharmaceutical companies.
Significant representations have included: Aberdare Ventures, Aperon Biosystems, Inc., eBay Inc., Cocensys, Inc., CV Therapeutics Inc., Exelixis; Inc., Investigen, Inc., Maveron LLC, Nokia/Innovent, Ofoto, Inc., Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., PalmSource, Inc., Sony Online Entertainment Inc., Telik, Inc., and Venture Strategy Partners.
Ms. Marshall is a frequent speaker on issues related to venture capital, emerging growth companies, life sciences, public securities and entrepreneurship.
Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Marshall was a partner at Cooley Godward LLP where she served as Chair of the firm's Business Department and head of its Palo Alto office.

Ted Driscoll, Board Director, Sand Hills Angels
Ted Driscoll is a Venture Partner at Claremont Creek Ventures and a Special Limited Partner at Novus Ventures. Over the past two decades, Ted helped found five successful companies in imaging-related markets. He was founder and CEO of Be Here Technologies, a pioneer in Internet, Broadcast and Videoconferencing technologies. He served as a Division President and CTO of Diasonics, with responsibility for its MRI, ultrasound, digital X-ray, lithotripsy and acoustic ablation technology areas. He had earlier directed the technology team that developed the first commercial MRI scanners and numerous advance in MR imaging. Previously, he was Vice President of Engineering and R&D; of Identix, now a world leader in fingerprint and face recognition, and Director of R&D; at International Imaging Systems, an early pioneer in remote sensing. His research and patents in ultrasound therapy and acoustic hemostasis also led to the founding of another company, Therus, now partnered with Boston Scientific.
Ted earned a PhD from Stanford University in Digital Imaging, Masters degrees from Harvard University in Computer Graphics and Remote Sensing, and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Ted holds 40+ granted U.S. and foreign patents in image-related fields, with approximately 30 additional pending applications.
Bob Ward, Practice Leader, Kaiser Permanente Ventures
Bob joined Kaiser Permanente's venture development group in 1997. He is responsible for managing the pipeline of new venture prospects as well as leading investment evaluations and financing decisions. In 2002, he was instrumental in establishing the Kaiser Permanente Venture Fund. Bob is a manager or board observer for several portfolio investments.
His previous work at Kaiser Permanente includes hearing aid centers in California and creation of the HEARx West national hearing venture. His experience includes investments in disease management, digital image archiving, optical equipment manufacturing, and diligence on multiple investment candidates.
Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Bob worked in banking, primarily in treasury performance metrics, incentive compensation and financial training. His banking career includes six years at Wells Fargo Bank implementing new strategy and financial measurement practices during a period of intense competition and deregulation. He has also worked for smaller financial institutions with roles on senior management teams.
Bob holds an MBA in Finance from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the University of Washington.
Pratik Shah, Ph.D., Venture Partner, Thomas, McNerney & Partners
Pratik is a Venture Partner with Thomas, McNerney & Partners.
Prior to this he was the Chief Business Officer and co-founder of Kalypsys, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and clinical development of new medicines for cancer, inflammation and metabolic disease using its proprietary automation technologies. At Kalypsys, he was responsible for the overall strategy, business development and operations of the company and oversaw raising more than $130 million in equity financings and corporate deals.
Prior to co-founding Kalypsys, Pratik was at McKinsey & Company where he focused on biotechnology and venture capital projects. Pratik was formerly co-founder and VP of Operations at NephRx Corporation, a start-up company focused on the discovery of therapeutic proteins for renal disease. He is currently a board member of Ocera Therapeutics, Inc.
Pratik holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of California at Irvine and both a Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.

Jerry Iwata, Senior Vice President, Technology & Life Sciences, Comerica Bank
Mr. Iwata has over 15 years experience in structuring and underwriting debt financing to private and public companies. While at Comerica, he has been involved in financing as little as $250,000 to a Series A pre-revenue company, and up to $100 million in a bank debt syndication to a public company to fund acquisitions. He joined Comerica Bank in 2001 through Comerica�s acquisition of Imperial Bank.
Mr. Iwata had been part of Imperial Bank�s emerging growth division which was focused primarily on debt financing to venture backed companies. He works out of the division�s headquarter office in Palo Alto, Ca. and focuses on businesses in security, communications, storage, semiconductor, enterprise software, and computing and the life sciences industries.
Prior to joining Comerica Bank, he spent 10 years at Union Bank where he was a Vice President and Relationship Manager. While at Union Bank, Mr. Iwata was involved in providing growth financing to local and foreign owned companies in various industries.
He holds a B.A in Economics from San Francisco State and M.B.A from San Diego State University.
Andrew McMillan, Ph.D., Associate, 5AM Ventures
Dr. McMillan joined 5AM Ventures in 2005 from NASA, where he was a Principal Investigator in the Bioengineering Branch and member of the Center for Nanotechnology at the Ames Research Center.
Dr. McMillan's contributions to the nanotechnology field have resulted in sixteen publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Materials, JACS and PNAS, and have been featured in US News & World Report, Scientific American, New Scientist, and AIChE Journal.
Dr. McMillan holds a BS in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill and a PhD in Chemistry from Emory University, where he earned department honors for his research in biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering.
Dr. McMillan is based in 5AM Ventures' San Francisco office.
Jeff Gordon, Director, Business and Community Partnerships, San Jose State University Foundation
Jeff Gordon joined the Foundation in March 2004 with 23 years of private sector experience working in the telecommunications industry in a range of strategy, business development, marketing and sales roles.
Over a 14 year career with Pacific Bell he served as a Director of Broadband Services, Strategy and was the first company Director of Sales (subsequently becoming Vice President of Bay Area Public Sector Sales). He has worked with numerous technology-based entrepreneurial ventures, including serving as Director of Industry Relations for Silicon Valley start-up IPWireless and has provided business/market development and strategic consulting services to private and public sector, as well as non-profit clients.
As Director of Business and Community Partnerships, Jeff is responsible for extending and increasing SJSU research, grant and collaborative opportunities for campus faculty, students and academic resources-targeting both private and public sector initiatives. Having also worked with distance learning and higher education issues, Gordon brings experience facilitating collaborative ventures between public and private sector interests.
He holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from San Diego State University, and M.A. in Public Policy Analysis from Claremont Graduate University.
