Ving Lee, PhD - Senior Vice President, Research, Limerick BioPharma - has devoted many years to the discovery of new anti-infectives. He will discuss how revisiting old natural products, with defined endpoints for clinical needs, provides potential commercial opportunities; examples from the discovery of new tetracyclines, beta-lactams for problematic Gram-positive pathogens, and uridyl peptide antibiotics will be highlighted. He will also discuss how observations from the above work led to a component of the technology platform of Limerick Biopharm Inc.

In this session, Directors from the NCI SBIR Development Center will talk to current and potential grantees about the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II Bridge Award and other opportunities such as their contract topics. After the presentation, each attendee will be granted a private meeting with Mr. Michael Weingarten – the Director of the NCI SBIR Development Center – and/or Dr. Ali Andalibi – the Program Director of the NCI SBIR Development Center.

New Reforms in Patent Law | Wed., Oct. 1, 2008
Liz Howard, of Orrick, will present a summary of the latest developments from the Federal Circuit, and the Supreme Court, in patent law. Included will be a discussion of case law relating to what constitutes inequitable conduct in obtaining patents, what constitutes willful infringement, when licensing "exhausts" your patent rights going forward, how courts are now evaluating "obviousness" of a patent in deciding patent validity, and the latest word on the question of patentable subject matter. Dr. Howard will also discuss the potential impact of these trends on patent drafting strategies, as well as on licensing strategies. The session will also include ample opportunity for questions and answers from the audience.
